Young women from Nong Nah going about their business.
During our hike onto the plateau (Lum Iawpaw, Great Grandmother Mountain), we passed by some women from Nong Nah. They didn't understand English, but were happy to pause for a moment while I took their picture. They have baskets on their backs (but carried by strap across their foreheads) which are either for collecting firewood or for collecting broomstick weed (which is actually a grass). The grass is harvested and used to make, believe it or not, brooms. Also, it is used to make mats/screens which are exported to Japan and this forms most of their income. The region also grows oranges, but as you can see from this view, not all areas are good for citrus.
Note the gingham aprons the women wear. Nearly all women wear these aprons which are rectangular sheets of fabric wrapped under one arm, and pinned over the opposite shoulder.
